Getting your first book published this way is easier than ever before, it turns out. If your interest is piqued, should you work with a national publisher or should you self publish? Perhaps I’ll examine the pros, cons and how-to’s of winning a publishing contract in another column, but for today, I’d like to share the results of three first time authors. A solid book can enhance an executive’s validity as an established “thought leader” on topics such as How to Use Facebook to Grow Your Small Business (I recently covered this new book from Wiley & Sons by Ramon Ray). Being a published author enhances their credibility and stature, which is certainly good. Other authors publish books to document their business philosophy and thinking. That said, there is much success for books such as “31 Tips to Increase Your Business, Using LinkedIn” (an ebook by the founders of .) It’s not a book about “them,” but 30-plus percent of the people who download it and read it end up engaging and buying sales-acceleration software from them. You will incorporate your thoughts and experiences into the material, naturally, but fascinating as you may be, the book will be about serving your readers. In the nonfiction arena, especially for a first time book, unless you are household-name-level famous, you will be most successful writing about a Big Idea – how to accomplish something better, become richer, thinner, more socially conscious or more successful in business.
